Oral Surgery
The idea of surgery can sound scary, but at Luth & Heideman Center for Dental Care, we use up-scale techniques and technology to make all of our oral procedures quick, painless, and precise.
At our office, you can expect your treatment to be handled with the utmost care, discretion, and concern for you and your wellbeing. Not everyone needs oral surgery, but it isn’t uncommon, so if you find yourself in that number, you have come to the right place.
FRENECTOMY
A frenectomy, in dental terms, is a procedure where a small section of tissue in your mouth—called a frenulum or frenum—is either cut or modified to help you talk and eat better. There are two instances where a frenectomy is typically performed:
TONGUE-TIE
A tongue-tie is a condition that happens due to an abscess of tissue forming under the tongue, called the frenum. A tongue tie will generally be resolved shortly after birth.
A tied tongue can severely restrict the movement of the tongue causing problems with breastfeeding, swallowing, or speech development. The surgical procedure modifies the length of the frenum to allow the tongue a wider range of motion.
LIP TIE
A lip tie, like a tongue tie, is a condition where the tissue in the lip frenulum restricts movement in the mouth. Rather than restricting tongue movement, a lip tie restricts lip movement. This can also cause problems with breastfeeding, swallowing, or speech development.
A lip tie is generally removed or modified shortly after birth to allow the child the ability to better eat and develop.
LASER GROWTH REMOVAL
Gum tissue, or other tissue in the mouth, may occasionally cause irritation, discomfort, or problems with dental devices. We use the most sophisticated technology here at Luth & Heideman Center for Dental Care, so treating these growths will be as painless and efficient as possible.
Laser growth treatment uses a laser to burn away excess tissue. The procedure is done using a numbing agent and a laser, both designed for oral use. The laser cauterizes the tissue as it is burned away, so there is little chance of infection from a laser treatment.
Having your gum tissue burned away may seem like a painful process, both during and after. But because of the nature of lasers, the process is relatively painless and has a faster recovery time.
Recovering from laser treatment is usually faster than a treatment using incisions. Patients usually notice less pain and discomfort while the treated area heals.
SIMPLE EXTRACTIONS
Some patients will need to have a tooth extracted as part of a larger treatment. It is common for teeth to be extracted for:
- Infection that has damaged the tooth beyond recovery
- The formation of extra teeth
- Removing a fractured or malformed tooth
- Impacted teeth
One of the most common tooth extractions we perform is wisdom teeth removal. Most individuals have their wisdom teeth removed in their late teen or early adult years.
Tooth extractions are done with the assistance of numbing agents. Our dentist will then use special tools to either gently pry the tooth from the gums or separate it so that it can be
BONE GRAFTS
A bone graft in the jaw is used to add mass or density to other portions of the jaw where disease or genetics may have left the bone weakened or damaged.
We can take a bone graft from somewhere else in your body or from a tissue bank, and then we’ll fuse it with the existing jaw bone. The results of bone grafts will leave your jawbone stronger and healthier.
