Gum disease is a common issue that affects millions of Americans. In fact, the CDC has found that close to half of all Americans deal with some form of periodontal disease. We hope to lower that number. So if you are struggling with gum disease, don’t hesitate to give us a call so we can help you make a full recovery.
There are many ways someone can avoid gum disease. Frequent trips to the dentist and basic oral hygiene are a great way to start! But if you’ve already passed that point, don’t worry! The Luth & Heideman Center for Dental Care in Las Vegas can also help with pain relief and treatment for gum disease to restore your mouth to full health.
What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a painful inflammatory infection of the gums. This infection is caused by plaque deposits that haven’t been properly cleaned from your teeth—usually in those spots between your teeth and near your gumline that you can’t quite get with your regular toothbrush.
Plaque contains lots of bacteria that can cause considerable irritation and damage to your gums. To properly stop these bacteria from causing problems in your mouth, develop strong habits of brushing and flossing daily. Good oral hygiene is a great way to clear away food particles and plaque buildup from your teeth and gums.
However, hardened plaque, commonly called tartar, becomes nearly impossible to remove with at-home treatments. The buildup can start to irritate your teeth and gums which leads to infection and periodontitis. This is why regular professional cleanings twice a year with your dentist here at Luth & Heideman Center for Dental Care are so important to catch these hard to reach spots.
Common Symptoms of Gum Disease
If you’re nervous about gum disease, please don’t be! At the Luth & Heideman Center for Dental Care, we have the tools and experience necessary to help even very severe cases.
Gum disease has different stages of severity. The most mild stage is called “gingivitis,” which usually presents itself with the following symptoms:
- Pink-tinged toothbrush after brushing.
- Spitting out blood after brushing or flossing your teeth.
- Easily bleeding gums.
- Bad breath.
- Swollen or puffy gums.
If left untreated, gingivitis will progress to a more severe form of periodontal disease known as “periodontitis.” Periodontitis can lead to even worse symptoms, such as the following:
- Gums that feel tender when touched.
- Bright red, dusky red, or purplish gums.
- Loose teeth or loss of teeth.
- New spaces develop between your teeth.
- Painful chewing.
- Gums that pull away from your teeth.
- Pus between your teeth and gums.
- A change in your bite causes problems in fitting your teeth together.
Our Gum Disease Treatments in Las Vegas
Here at Luth & Heideman Center for Dental Care, we’re proud to offer many different treatments for your gum health. This includes deep cleaning your gums before or in the early stages of gingivitis, as well as treating the bacteria from more severe forms of periodontitis.
Here are the many gum disease services we provide:
One of the simplest ways to treat gum disease is with an antibacterial mouthwash. Gum disease is caused by a harmful buildup of bacteria. Rather than using antibiotic treatments such as pills to fight off the bacteria, we typically prescribe a chlorhexidine oral rinse that does just as good of a job.
Treating your gum disease with oral washes in addition to regular oral hygiene can help eradicate infectious bacteria from your mouth.
Laser Gum Therapy
Laser gum therapy is a technique used with traditional cleaning methods to clear away harmful bacteria. These lasers are a painless and healing-promoting solution to infection and can eliminate bacteria more accurately than even very practiced hands.
During this procedure, the infected gum tissue will be methodically removed from around the root of your tooth using a small laser. We will then use special tools to scrape away the remaining tartar and plaque so you can enjoy an infection-free mouth again.
Scaling & Root Planing
This is the most common method of treating periodontitis. It is a more thorough procedure and is highly effective at removing infectious tartar from your mouth.
Scaling is the process of removing tartar from above and below the gumline using certain advanced dental tools. Root planing is a follow-up technique that helps reattach the gums to the teeth for a full recovery.
There are many different types of antibiotics used to treat gum disease but ARESTIN is specifically designed to be used directly in infected tooth pockets.
If your case merits it, after we scale your teeth, we will gently insert a small amount of ARESTIN into your tooth pocket. This antibiotic will be slowly released over the next few weeks, killing off any residual and harmful bacteria.
This is a great treatment option for ensuring symptoms of gum disease stay away for good.
